By far the best bird/owner behavior info site. Our 2 yr old female Alexandrine is so kind and gentle natured, lives inside in two large ajoining cages. out of cage has a mobile perch with large bowl she loves to wash her feet in and i give her a spray bottle bath on demand she tells me by way of flying to the bottle and flapping her wings. she has a stable diet of veg, fruit, nuts, sunflower seed. has allways done the flock call morning/evenings or if we go to another room, just answer her and she's happy, she we call again if more than 10 minutes or so go by. while she does'nt talk she can melody like sound- "Goodgirl, Out, No, Hello, and a string of gobble gabble sounds when she is telling us off, usually when she is returned to cage before she is ready.::")) Now i have a question. Is it possible she is territorial or feels she has to be the protector of the house from wild birds. As of the last 2 months she has been ear spliting screeching all day long at the birds outside. some answer her. We respond by putting her in cage covers down for some time then bringing her back out. she gets it, but once uncovered the first bird she hears she starts again. To test this therory i have got her out after night fall ie: no birds, she is her normal calm happy self. but then a car with noisy muffler went by and she let go again untill it was gone. her body language while screeching is extended neck whole body ridgid pupils dialated as in search mode toward door or windows. sometimes between screeches she will turn look at us as if to say we should be concerned or we are under threat. As we have had her since she was just a couple of months old we feel we can read her fairly well, but this has me stumpted. our main living area is 40' in lenght so she has a daily flight. I have ruled out- lack of excersize, attention getting, bordom, crabiness, health.etc. She is in beautiful condition, sleek clean, rich coloured, no health problems. Can she be calling birds in a mating season type way? i doubt it,but i am ignorant in that side of bird behavior. could there be a new type of bird thats came to this area that she dosn't want here. I appoligize for this turning into a book I'm not good at condensing I wanted to give you a good idea of my awareness of the usual behavior misunderstandings of the owner/carers that create the problem, I don't think that is the case here. However you may see something in this that I am not seeing. Please keep up the good work you do here.Im sure Lots of Birds are enjoying a better life because of the advice you are giving thier owners. MY Sincerest Best Wishes. Pamela. and from Alexandrine Flo.

thanks for the info, i have an indian ringneck, when i first got him (7 months ago) i kept him outside away from my 3 dogs who bark at his cage, now that it is winter in Australia i have brought him inside. The dogs are better with him now but he is still very nervous when i go near his cage, let alone when i try to put my hands in. In the last month i have been researching and trying to learn as much as i can about these birds to try to give him a good life. I try to put the dogs outside and spend time with him most days, but i do shift work so it is usually not at the same time each day. He has started to talk a little, but is still very nervous, am i doing the right things? A lot of sites i have visited say that in order to train him he needs to be away from his cage, how do i do that when he is so scared of me he runs away? I have taken him out a number of times with a towel, but this seems very heavy handed and not likely to foster a mutual trust, help, what do i do next?
