Okay, in this video, you’ll get to see 2 true stories.
I believe studying case studies is an excellent way to learn lessons so hopefully I’ll achieve some success with you through my case study series.
http://ttp-videos.s3.amazonaws.com/casestudies.flvThe format of this video was different. It was more you reading… Did you like it this way? Or did you miss my voice? (Now, be honest!)
And did you not just get BLOWN away by my amazing video editing skills? I wonder if any of you noticed the “mood-setting” sound in the background (rain and thunderbolts – very soothing, wasn’t it?)
On a serious note (‘cuz you know I’m a serious guy…) -
Do you have any experiences of your own to share?
Heck, you know what I’ll do? If I get at least 20 people post their experiences, I’ll put it all together in an online book and give it away for free with full credit to you.
It gets dramatic when THOUSANDS of bird owners read that report and benefit from it.
In return, we’ll get that “warm fuzzy” feeling of potentially saving bird lives.
So reply below, if you are interested in helping.
Okay, now moving on…
Watch out for tomorrow’s e-mail where I report on a parrot and duck face off
(I’m serious… sort of
You’ll find out tomorrow!)

Video was not very clear at the end.
Too vague and not very interesting at all. Not sure if the items at the end were toxic or were okay to feed.
Revamp the video presentations to be more informative next time.
JMK
EDIT FROM DANNY: Yes, you’re right. The ending was all messed up. I can see why you were confused. I have fixed the problem for now. Also, I agree with you that the video needs to be professional. I’ll try to improve on it over the coming days – I need to brush up on my ninja “video editing” skills
I am so glad I saw this…I had no idea candles were toxic to birds. I would have lit them around the house.
Very informative, but does just lighting candles hurt the birds or are you referring to ingestion of candles??? I really missed hearing your voice! Much more enjoyable to listen to than to read.
EDIT FROM DANNY: The reason why some candles can kill or make a bird sick especially the small birds is the scented candles. When they are burning they omit fumes that are harmful to the bird’s lungs. Here is a site that has even more dangers to birds including cooking bags- http://www.parrotparrot.com/birdhealth/alerts.htm
You said candles are dangerous, what about the plug in air fresheners. Are those ok to use??
Thank you for the video. I personally like hearing your voice but reading is ok too. It all helps me to learn what to do and what not to do. I burn a lot of candles in the house so I’ll make sure I don’t do it anywhere near my baby. I appreciate what you are doing. I am just so thankful for you. Mary Lou
I didn’t realize cuttlebones were that dangerous to big birds. What should be used instead to give them calcium?
EDIT FROM DANNY:For large Parrots you shouldn’t give them the cuttlebone, but you can use a grater to shred off the soft part of the bone and throw away the hard part, or you can buy pure calcium powder and sprinkle it on the bird’s food. You can also give your birds yogurt, it has a lot of calcium and other good things in it, and they can digest it with no problem.
Personnally I prefer your voice Danny but found the video very imformative all the same. I didnt know about the candles and will go to the site about the other alerts. Also, some toys that we buy for the parrots are small and plastic – would that be just as dangerous if the bird was to “eat” it? And what about painted wood? is that toxic too? I dont want Rosie to be bored and his cage is full of toys but dont want to harm him either. Thanks Danny
Rain sound was really soothing for me as I missed it. I learn lots of things about taking care of a bird from your videos. Thank you Danny.
idiot stupid mad person how could you talk about killing a bird?
EDIT FROM DANNY: WOAH! You completely misunderstand me. This post is about what NOT to do so your bird doesn’t get killed accidentally.
i loved the video and the the lightning in the back added an eery dramatic effect to it, very indicative of the dangers ahead. i learned that candles are harmful i did not know that before. missed your shakey voice hah hah . great video thanks a lot
loved the video. is cuttlebone the same one you buy from a pet shop its hard and you hang it from the side of the cage with a peice of wire? missed your voice
thanks danny, upon seeing the video it helps me more to understand how to take care of my bird, there was a time a had a parrot named Peggy. one day i noticed something is wrong, he’s not as active as before even he’s talking to me i feel the difference, so i immediately separated him from the girl, and gave him a medication without even asking my vet just the intention of making him feel better,, an antibiotic and gave it to him directly to his mouth. He even talk to me before going to sleep… and the worst morning i had when my husband woke up and shouting …my peggy’s dead.
I found the video very informative. I certainly didn’t know that cuttlefish bone was dangerous for some birds. But what about Indian ringnecks, can they handle it and do my ringnecks needs shellgrit so that seeds in their crop are able to be gound up?
Geesh i didn’t know cuttlebones could be so dangerous now what about them for my Quakers ? i do have one but so far they don’t seem to bother with it . Thank you for the great info
The video is very informative; miss the verbal communication and the words in the pop up boxes went a little fast for me and might be hard for people that have english as a second language; but overall I give it 2 thumbs up!!!!
Hi Danny!
Very scary movie, the background sound was also scary.
I hope a´ll never be bad to my beatiful amazons
Best regards
Paula
Thanks for the video. I will keep the video in mind when I paint or use pesticides or even when I feed the birds I have just bought. This is the first time I have pet birds in my house.
Thanks and Keep sending your tips on caring of pets.
God Bless You.
Regards
Heena
Hi Danny.
Yes I missed your voice, I am not so fast reader
I have English as a second language like some of your other e-mails friends.
The subtitle of this message was breath taken for me.
Sure you where making people to watch it because of it.
I think that was good, because you are telling important thing there.
Thanks for good tips what I can do to not kill my bird.
Greetings from Iceland.
Peta
Missed your voice,Danny…but the rain effects made me run down the hall…(heheheheh!!!) OK, scented candles are bad news, also most aerosol air fresheners…how about incense???
Greetings from Beautiful Downtown Madison,WI.!!!
Checked out that site, and now I need to share a couple of things…
(1)My Dad accidently killed his 25 year old African Grey parrot by burning a Teflon coated pan…Avoid keeping your bird in the kitchen if possible!!!
(2) I’d be willing to bet that the birdowner whose Parrot was killed by Freon had a gas stove with a pilot light…freon itself ain’t too good: but if it is exposed to open flame it changes into PHOSGENE GAS, which is a deadly nerve agent!!!
Have your refrigerators and freezers checked twice a year for safety.
i jsut want to say that reguardless of the info i think that you are educating a lot of people who love there birds and want to do whatever they can to make sure their birds are healthy and well maintained, which is something that you can t find online with out paying for it. so i commend you for doing what your doing no matter how unprofessional it may seem. as long as you know what your talking about im gonna listen and take the advice you give and see if it works on my own birds. I think you just need to keep up the good work. You must be doing something goodd for all these people to be responding. i think that it helps out alot to know what COULD kill your bird. i love candles but i now put them on candle burners so there are no fumes and that works out fine , no flame and no smoke when you blow them out. by all means if there is any other things that could kill my birds that i might have in my house PLEASE POST IT thanks
Hi,
Thanks for the the advice, would’nt even thought about paint !!
Is Cuttlebone the same as cuttlefish ? I am a new owner and was advised to put some cuttlefish through the bars so Stanley can get his calcium. By the way, Stanley is a 15 week old African Grey.
Thanks and more thanks for your advice,
Carrie

Hi Danny,
Certainly did miss that sexy voice, am really glad i have found you! I am a new owner of an 11 year old african grey called percy who i inherited from my dad so don’t know alot yet. I do know that a while ago Percy suffered from kidney failure due to over use of fly spray by somebody who was looking after him. I don’t know exact details but he had 50/50 chance of living, he pulled through and has fitted into our family really well.
Am decorating soon so will be extra careful.
Would also be grateful for your thoughts on natural incence.
Hi danny,
I liked the new format! It takes forever to load a video even though I have broadband…….I did miss your voice but the sound effects were great!
Thank you for doing this for bird owners, it must take up alot of your time!
Hi Danny. I have to agree with so many other’s who posted. I MISSED YOUR VOICE TOO!
Anyway…I’m really anxious to see your reply to Rebecca’s question about plug in air fresheners. I have one in my livingroom, about 15 ft away from Otis’s cage. Its very eromatic and a pleasant scent but if there’s any danger of it making Otis ill….I’ll get rid of it immediately!
P.S. I also want to commend you for offering such helpful FREE information to all us bird owners. I have owned birds for yrs now….ones’ that I’ve only been able to talk to through their cages. But because I always felt I wanted a more ‘hands-on’ relationship with a feathered friend, I recently bought Otis, a Green Cheek Conure. I have to admit….OWNING A PARROT IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT BALLGAME and I am a bit overwhelmed by it all, as well as, at an almost complete loss at how to handle him properly. He’s in between “tame”….meaning….he’ll step up easy enough but he bites at my clothes and skin and immediately heads to my shoulders or the top of my head! I’ve been surfing the net and reading books from the library but I havnt had much success finding any answers to my particular problem with Otis. So many (so called) “bird experts” controdict eachother!! One say’s “do this”. Another says “dont do that”! Is it any wonder I’m overwhelmed?!?!? However….I do appreciate the free advice and tips you offer on your site. Like I said though….I miss your voice! *hugs and thanks*
Can smoking around an African Grey cause him to want to pluck himself, of all of his feathers.
Please help
Cockatiel throwing up.
I had a cockatiel that had injested something that caused the bird to keep on vomiting. He was becoming dehydrated. We called the vet, but, because he was a good distance away, he suggested an eye dropper be used with a couple of drops of Pepto Bismol. This stopped the vomiting. We proceeded to the vet and had him checked out and fed him some mineral water and he recovered.
Thanks for the video, but, funny thing, I read the exact articles on the net a few days ago. Can’t remember where since I do a lot of surfing for info about parrots. But for those that don’t do a lot of reading, surfing, etc., this was extremely important information.
And to the person who asked if smoking would cause a parrot to feather-pluck. Smoking is bad for the health. EVERYONE’S health, especially your parrot’s. They have a very small respiratory tract and they have NO filtering system. This is why ALL FUMES are extremely harmful and even deadly. Cleaning solutions should never be used around parrots, that includes Windex, etc. When you have to clean, PLEASE remove your parrot from the area and don’t return it for a while until you are sure the fumes are completely gone.
Sorry, couldn’t help myself. I get very upset when I hear about parrots dying due to these type of accidents…
Have a good day! And yes, I missed your voice, but reading was faster…
YES I DO LIKE YOUR VOICE BETTER, BUT I GUESS I WILL LIVE. AND MY BIRD AS WELL.
NO CUTTLE BONES. NO FUMES, NO AVACADOS OR CHOCOLATE,
GOTCHA
Both ways are fine-voice vs. reading, altho reading was faster. Knew about fumes but, wow, never would have guessed about cuttlebone. Took it IMMEDIATELY out of Fergus-my young senegal’s cage. To the one person-cuttlebone is the skeleton of the poor cuttle fish. Yogurt is so much safer-good for you, dogs, cats, birds-just about anything! Everybody-don’t forget to bath your bird buddies! So glad I was misdirected to your site accidently Danny. As was said before, thank you from all of us out here for offering this important info for free. Enjoy the info-keep it coming!
I missed your voice too, but enjoyed the video. I would like to see more on how to get African Greys to stop biting! I’ve had mine for over two weeks now, am home all day with him and can hand feed him treats, but when I want to touch his head or pet him, he jerks his head towards my hand as fast as he can and says “whew” or laughs. He won’t step up on me unless I have a towel wrapped around my arm, and I really don’t feel like losing a finger, so I’m hoping you have some info on ways to get him to stop biting. I tried the suggestions you had in the first video, but they don’t seem to be working for my Grey.
There was no sound at all and the words went by too fast to read, but I got the idea, I’m sure. We don’t give our parrots cuttlebones (an African Gray and a Cockatoo), but we burn candles sometimes and they seem to be just fine. Perhaps that is because they are not in direct contact with the candle and we have a big open house. We know avocados would kill them, as would chocolate, but they love what we eat, so we try to feed them well. They are our “feathered kids” and are so much fun!
I too had no idea candles were bad for parrots. I have a room fullof candles but thankfully i have not lit onw with Chant in the room. Thank you for this values information. Now on the cutlefich, i thought that was fine for birds. The product has been removed from his cage. Thank you
I think it was interesting and I learned things I did not know. I have a quaker parrot and two parakeets and really enjoy them. Like the info given. So glad I found your site. I like when you tell us but reading is ok also, I just thank you for your time you put into the site to inform each of us and the ability to see what others have to tell us. Again thanks. Frances
I think you are amazing and I like all the ways you have done both videos I have seen – I like that they are real and not over processed.
The story of Dora was very sad but I heard a very sad tale at Christmas time. I know a lady who has 4 parrots and she mentioned that she had only had her caique for 6 moths and that her previous one had more character. Knowing that parrots normally have reasonable lives I asked what happened to the previous one and she told me this story. Her birds were all loose in the house and she had been washing the kitchen floor when the phone rang. She answered it and after a 5 minute coversation checked on the whereabouts of her birds and she found the caique drowned in th bucket of water she had been using to clean the floor. It had been unable to escape once it fell in so a fluke accident but one I’m sure we can all relate to.
very very good video, nice studies
Hi Danny,
Nice and very informative video!
For us parrot lovers, you are heaven sent! I’m learning a lot and I’m enjoying my parrot more! Now, I’m seriously thinking of adding more parrots in my house.
Please keep sending us your valuable information and knowledge for our parrots. Best wishes and more power to you!
Hi Danny……..
Very Informative video i like the back ground noise and the message was loud and clear..I have started taking care of my bird very seriously.
Please send your valuable inputs…
Hello Danni,
Thanks for providing us with such important information.
I see that a lot of people who have seen this video were shocked after about candles and I am not an exception.
I have just bought my Sun Conure, and definitely this info will help me to keep my lovely bird healthy.
When I went in the shop and I‘ve seen him, I just couldn’t go out, I wanted take him with me. The way he looked at me it was amazing, because in the shop were pretty big variety of parrots, but I felt that he is special. I bought sun conure home and I gave him name Max. And as I see we are doing not bad. He is tacking food from my hands, and touching my fingers – he is very pretty bird. But unfortunately I do not know much about training for sun conure. And I do have small problem which I believe can grow fast – screaming, as already I started to hear complains from my husband, and I can say that soon I am expecting nabors to pay a visit to me… If you could advice anything, I would appreciate. Thanks
I LOST MY COCKATOO THE SAME WAY, WITH HOME RENOVATIONS THE CAGE WAS STANDING UNDER THE TOILET WINDOW IN ONE ROOM. AND THE FUMES OF THE TOILET SPRAY ACTUALLY KILLED HER.
WE WERE DEVESTATED!!
THANKS FOR THE TELLING EVERYBODY!! I’VE ALSO LEARNED A PAINFULL LESSON!!
REGARDS
ANSIE
HI DANNY.
I LIKE YOUR VOICE BETTER, I HAVE DXLIXCIA AND I’M A VERY SLOW READER.
I HAVE NOT EXPERIANCE ANY THING LIKE THAT AND I HOPE I NEVER DO. I HAVE A GOLFFIN COOKATOO, AN AFCRAIN GRAY AND TWO COOKITOO’S
Thankyou so much for this info …..I was recently at the beach for a holiday and thought to pick up some cuttle fish….luckily I didnt. And thanks to you we wont have to go through the heart break of losing our bird…
Really good info. I have lost 2 Quakers. It could’ve been candles but my son said the toxins from a no stick pan will poison a bird too Teflon). That’s a scary thought we breathe that and cook our food on teflon. Do you know if the teflon will poison a bird?
I think the voice on the video would be easier, it moved a bit fast and I had to rerun a few times to be able to read it all.
I was told my vet, that teflon is DEFINATELY toxic to birds
Candles are not dangerous to birds. It is the wicks that are. You can have candles burning however always be sure that somewhere on it, it states “LEAD FREE”. It is the lead in the wicks when they burn that kills birds. The lead becomes a gas.
Don’t worry about your voice, it’s much better than having to read, having seen the same facts where you were talking; much easier to diagest!
I like the video it’s very informative and Ilike the background effects. It is however a little to much reading I like the way Danny talks.
Hi Danny, I like the video, it was different and I could hear your voice as I was reading. Life’s too short to pick everything apart-just be creative!!!
